Interview with Qigu Jiang and Wang Yefeng

To explore the idea of democratic pedagogy in global perspective, I interviewed two SAIC instructors Yefeng Wang and Qigu Jiang.
Yefeng Wang

Qigu Jiang

- Both of them came from China, the differences was Yefeng Wang just started his teaching life last year and Qigu Jiang has been teaching for over 10 years.
-I asked them how do they practice democratic pedagogy in art education? They did not face too much contradictory situation due to their communism social background.
-They were questioning what art education would do to our society.
-Mr. Jiang was questioning about the art department curriculum in SAIC that a lot of students could not find a job after they graduate.
-Mr. Jiang pointed out that students from the East and West have different study patterns.
-Students in the West would actively ask the teachers for what he or she wants to learn.
-He thought that the goal of education is to find the essence of being a human.
-Wang said in the interview that the younger generation in China really has a good access to resources. He joked that “they were born with computers.”
- Young people in China rely on the computer and Internet on a daily basis. Besides, it is a trend that more and more Chinese students now study abroad.
-As a result, they have the access to information that is censored in China.
-Due to multiculturalism, more students are aware of their self-identity.
-Wang said that he especially realized that the “Marxism” practiced in China was taken partially from the Marxist thoughts, in order to serve the government.
